7 Days Lemosho Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Program

Climb Africa’s highest mountain via the scenic Lemosho Route, one of the best routes on Mount Kilimanjaro for acclimatization and summit success. This route begins on the western side of the mountain and crosses the beautiful Shira Plateau before joining the Machame trail.


Arrival Day – Tanzania

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi.

Later, your mountain guide will provide a detailed trek briefing and gear check to ensure you are ready for the climb.

Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 7,380 ft (2,250 m) → 9,020 ft (2,750 m)
Distance: 18 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest

After breakfast, you will drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration with Kilimanjaro National Park.

From there, a short drive takes you to the trailhead where your trek begins. The trail passes through the beautiful rainforest of the Lemosho Glades, where you may see monkeys and unique birdlife.

After a picnic lunch along the trail, continue hiking to Mti Mkubwa Camp, where dinner and overnight await.


Day 2

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp 2

Elevation: 9,020 ft (2,750 m) → 12,600 ft (3,840 m)
Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Today is a longer trekking day as you ascend through moorland landscapes. The trail gradually climbs across the Shira Plateau, one of the largest high-altitude plateaus in the world.

You will pass Shira Camp 1 and continue towards Shira Camp 2, with beautiful views of the Shira Cathedral and surrounding volcanic formations.

Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp 2.


Day 3

Shira Camp 2 – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Elevation: 12,600 ft (3,840 m) → 15,190 ft (4,600 m) → 12,960 ft (3,950 m)
Hiking Time: 7 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert / Alpine Desert

After breakfast, the trail climbs gradually toward Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation created by earlier volcanic activity.

This climb helps your body acclimatize to the altitude. After lunch near Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp, located beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

Enjoy stunning views of glaciers and dramatic mountain scenery before dinner and overnight.


Day 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 12,960 ft (3,950 m) → 13,780 ft (4,035 m)
Distance: 7 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

After breakfast, you climb the famous Barranco Wall, often called the “Breakfast Wall.” While steep, it is not technical and offers amazing views.

From the top, the trail continues through rolling terrain toward Karanga Valley, arriving at Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows time for rest and additional acclimatization.

Day 5

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 13,780 ft (4,035 m) → 15,100 ft (4,600 m)
Distance: 6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, continue the climb toward Barafu Camp. Along the way you will enjoy views of Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak.

Arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon, where you will rest and prepare for the summit attempt. Early dinner is served before you sleep for a few hours.


Day 6

Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 15,100 ft (4,600 m) → 19,341 ft (5,895 m) → 10,170 ft (3,100 m)
Distance: 18 km
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

Around midnight, you begin the summit trek with headlamps. The steep climb leads to Stella Point at the crater rim.

From Stella Point, continue for about one hour along the crater ridge to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating and taking photos, descend back to Barafu Camp for lunch and rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.


Day 7

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 10,170 ft (3,100 m) → 4,920 ft (1,500 m)
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.

At the gate, you will receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificates before returning to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and celebration with your climbing team.
